What should I include in author websites design for better reader engagement?

As I plan my author websites design, I’m trying to understand what actually works for readers and publishers. Who has experience building author sites, what key pages should I prioritize, where should I place books and blog, when is the right time to update content, why do some layouts perform better, and how can I keep it simple yet professional? Any honest suggestions from real experience?
